Kawasaki’s very popular Z1000 has gained a fully clothed sibling that fills the gap between the naked hooligan bike and the track-focused ZX-10R superbike just perfectly.

So just what kind of person is likely to lust after the new Kawasaki Z1000SX? The short answer is anybody who appreciates powerful motorcycles that are equally at home covering long distances on the road as on the racetrack. Superbike riders who want to enjoy greater comfort without sacrificing too much of the performance they’re used to will find that the new Kawasaki fits the bill perfectly, while those who want the ability to circulate briskly on the occasional track day are likely to look long and hard at the new Kawasaki. Based upon the very popular naked Z1000, the Z1000SX fills the gap between that machine and the racetrack focused ZX-10R superbike perfectly.
The Z1000SX uses the brawny liquid-cooled 16-valve 1043cc four-cylinder engine as the Z1000, but with taller gearing to take advantage of the streamlined fairing of the new model that increases both top speed and rider comfort levels at speed. Power output, at 138 PS (101,5 kW) is the same as the Zed, with both models reaching peak output at 9600 rpm. Maximum torque of 110 Nm at 7800 rpm is also identical, but just about everything else on the new bike is different. The aluminium frame is longer, narrower and taller than that of the Z1000, adding high-speed stability, while the engine is now rubber-mounted at the rear. The fuel tank has grown from 15 to 19 litres, but the midsection of the new aluminium frame dispenses with the need for side covers and is narrower than that of the naked bike, offering riders a shorter reach to the ground.
Kawasaki’s engineers have paid close attention to mass centralisation in their latest designs, and the Z1000SX is no exception. The new bike uses Horizontal Back- Link rear suspension that positions the rear shock absorber and its linkage above the swing-arm. much like that of the 2011 ZX-10R This adds the benefit of holding the shock far enough from the exhaust pipe that it is unaffected by the heat, as well as leaving room below for a larger exhaust pre-chamber, which in turn allows the silencer to be shorter and tidier. The back shock features rebound and preload adjustability, while the inverted 41mm front forks offer stepless compression and rebound damping along with spring preload adjustability. Braking is taken care of by 300mm petal discs gripped by opposed four piston radial mount calipers in cahoots with a radial pump master cylinder up front. The rear stoppers consist of a single piston caliper gripping a 250mm petal disc, and an ABS version will also be available. Unsprung weight is kept low thanks to the use of lightweight six-spoke alloy wheels.
The Kawasaki Z1000SX is obviously going to be frequently used over long distances, so the designers went to great lengths to build in comfort features that were not really necessary for its street-fighting city-boy sibling, the Z1000 or the ZX-10R superbike. The riding position is similar to that of the Z1000, but with the handgrips moved about 10mm inward, and the thick urethane seat covers aid and abet the dampers fitted underneath the seat to reduce felt vibration. The front footpegs are rubber mounted, and the foot guards have rubber-mounted weights attached to keep things smooth. Best of all, the windscreen height is speedily adjustable over three positions spanning 500mm. There’s many a superbike owner out there who’d give his eyeteeth for such a feature.
